Devices with SiPM technology can detect extremely low numbers of photons and can even be operated in a single photon counting mode. Besides very high photon detection efficiencies, SiPM can boast ultra-short response time and extremely low power consumption compared to traditional avalanche photodiodes (APDs). SiPM is applicable to a variety of low light level (LLL) applications.
“This innovative SiPM technology from the Max Planck Society demonstrates promise for several important human and environmental health applications,” said Michael Ersoni, vice president and general manager of PerkinElmer’s global detection business. “This licensing agreement further complements and enhances PerkinElmer’s industry-leading portfolio of photon detection solutions. With access to the Max Planck Society´s SiPM technology, PerkinElmer is further positioned to serve applications including positron emission tomography (PET) diagnostic scanning and a variety of analytical fluorescence applications“.
The SiPM technology was initially developed by a group led by Professor Boris Dolgoshein from the Moscow State Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI), and further advanced through the cooperation of MEPhI and Professor Masahiro Teshima and Dr. Razmik Mirzoyan from the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich.
“As a world leader in photon detection, PerkinElmer is an ideal industrial partner for licensing our SiPM technology. PerkinElmer has the experience and global reach needed for introducing the SiPM technology to a variety of fast-moving markets so as to help advance both human and environmental health,” said Dr. Bernd Ctortecka, Patent and License Manager, Max Planck Innovation GmbH.

About Max Planck Innovation
Max Planck Innovation advises and supports scientists of the Max Planck Society in evaluating inventions and filing patent applications. Max Planck Innovation markets patents and technologies to industry and coaches founders of new companies based on research results from Max Planck Institutes.
Every year, Max Planck Innovation evaluates about 150 inventions, of which about half lead to the filing of a patent application. Since 2000, Max Planck Innovation advised about 50 spin-offs, closed more than 700 license deals and generated proceeds of more than 140 million Euros for inventors, institutes and the Max Planck Society. As a result, Max Planck Innovation is among the world's most successful technology transfer organizations. In June 2008, it was honoured for outstanding achievement in developing technology transfer and licensing with the IPTEC International Technology Transfer Award.
Max Planck Innovation was founded in 1970 as Garching Instrumente GmbH and operated under the name of Garching Innovation from 1993 to 2006.
